Local leaders in Greater Manchester and the UK Government are still in talks to try and agree new measures to slow the spread of COVID-19 in the North West of England.

Local leaders including Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham are demanding a better financial package before agreeing to any new measures.

The Mayor of Greater Manchester said:

“They are asking us to gamble our residents’ jobs, homes and businesses and a large chunk of our economy on a strategy that their own experts tell them might not work,”

However, the Government has said that it has the power to enforce Tier 3 restrictions on Greater Manchester without the support of local leaders if it feels it needs to.

Dominic Raab said the following on BBC Breakfast this morning:

“Ultimately we need to take action – we can’t have a situation as we have seen in Manchester where Andy Burnham is effectively trying to hold the Government over a barrel over money and politics when actually we need to take action.”
