The Annual Hay Hotfooters Trail Run is due to take place on Sunday 9th June 2024 on top of The Begwns just outside Hay on Wye. The run was first held in 2007 and has been held most year’s since pausing only for the COVID interruption.

The Begwns is an area of upland common land comprising a series of undulating hills to the southeast of Painscastle in Radnorshire. The Begwns are owned and managed by the National Trust and are grazed by cattle, ponies and sheep.

With the kind permission of the National Trust, the Magic Roundabout 10k Trail Run certainly lives up to the tagline “all  the views, less of the climb.” The run has the most breathtaking 360 degree views of the Brecon Beacons, Black Mountains and Radnorshire hills; and you can even see the Malvern hills and the Shropshire hills in the distance too.

Hay Hotfooters Running Club was formed in 2004 and the first Magic Roundabout Run was organised by the club in 2007. It has attracted up to 200 runners each year and the conditions are usually very favourable if occasionally quite warm.  It starts at the Roundabout and finishes just right of the highest point of the road from Ffynnon-Gynydd to Painscastle. Base camp is just to the left of this road.

The 10k course is a figure of 8, and the race is chipped timed, fully marked and marshalled with a water station and there is parking and toilets available to all onsite.

Of course, due to it’s location, the run is hilly in parts but the views make this all worthwhile!

All entrants receive a free T Shirt and free hot and cold refreshments at the finish and there are awards for the first 3 Men and first 3 Lady finishers!
