National Highways have provided an update on when work to repair railings and other features of Greyfriars Bridge in Hereford will take place.
Back in 2017/18, Andrew from the Hereford Community Clean Up Group was in discussion with Highways England about painting or replacing the railings on the Greyfriars Bridge in Hereford.
It was confirmed at the time that this was due to happen in 2020/21 however the plan was to replace the railing with fencing around 6ft to 8ft high due to Highways England at the time classing the current railings as a distraction to drivers. Sadly this would’ve meant that the view of the beautiful River Wye would no longer be visible for visitors to our city and to locals crossing the river every day.
Fortunately, after campaigning by Andrew and a number of social media posts by Your Herefordshire, the idea was scrapped.
Recently, we shared photos of one of the sets of steps that appears to be coming away from the main structure of the bridge, highlighting that maintenance is desperately needed!
Andrew has once again been in contact with National Highways, who have admitted that there may be a further delay to work taking place.
They told Andrew that work is scheduled to take place in 2023 or 2024 but that this may now be delayed further.
