COVID-19 cases are once again on the rise in Herefordshire, with a new variant of the virus confirmed to be in the United Kingdom.

The new variant, ‘deltacron’ is said to be a mixture of the Delta and Omicron variants and has been confirmed as spreading in the UK.

COVID-19 cases have risen by 56.3% in the previous seven day period in the UK, with a total of 399,820 cases of the virus confirmed. Hospitalisations are also on the rise, with 16.9% rise in the past seven days. A total of 9,475 patients were admitted into hospital in the United Kingdom in the past seven days with COVID-19.

Deaths within 28 days of testing positive for COVID-19 are also on the rise, with a total of 730 people dying in the past seven days.

In Herefordshire, cases are starting to rise rapidly once again, with a total of 795 new cases recorded in the seven day period ending 6th March. This is an increase of 39.7% on the previous seven day period. The Lugwardine, Withington & Moreton on Lugg area of the county is currently recording the highest COVID-19 infection rate, with a total of 49 new cases of the virus recorded in the seven day period ending 6th March, giving a COVID-19 infection rate of 616.6 cases per 100,000 population.
