A flood alert is in force on the River Wye in Herefordshire, following heavy rain in Wales.

The Environment Agency Flood Alert for the River Wye in Herefordshire says:

“River levels are forecast to rise at the Hay-On-Wye river gauge as a result of heavy rainfall. Consequently, flooding of property, roads and farmland is expected to begin between 14:00 and 16:00 today, 20/09/2023.

“We expect flooding to affect low lying land and roads along the River Wye from Hay on Wye to Ross on Wye. 

“Other locations that may be affected include the A438, Byford, Bredwardine and Hereford.

“Predicted peaks:- Hay on Wye 2.2m to 2.5m this evening, Bredwardine 4.0m to 4.2m overnight, Belmont 4.0m to 4.2m overnight, Old Wye Bridge 3.5m to 3.8m tomorrow morning, Ross on Wye 3.2m to 3.5m tomorrow afternoon.

“We expect river levels to remain high until tommorow night.

“We are closely monitoring the situation.

“Please avoid using low lying footpaths near local watercourses and avoid contact with flood water.

“This message will be updated by 09:00 tomorrow, 21/09/2021, or as the situation changes.”
