The shocking number of verbal and physical assaults on traffic wardens in Herefordshire has been revealed in latest figures.

A freedom of information request put in to Herefordshire Council asked the following question:

In the last financial year (2023/24), how many incidents did your authority record where traffic wardens – otherwise known as Civil Enforcement Officers – were assaulted by members of the public while carrying out council duties?

A response, shared by Herefordshire Council said:

“The Service Area confirmed there were 32 incidents where traffic wardens – otherwise known as Civil Enforcement Officers – were assaulted by members of the public while carrying out council duties.

“11 were physical assaults and 21 were verbal assaults.

“Verbal assaults included verbal abuse (shouting and swearing), threats of assault and physical harm, and hate speech.”
