Volunteers from the Friends of Churchill Gardens are frustrated at the damage caused by a fire in Churchill Gardens last week.

The fire was tackled by fire crews in the early hours of the morning on 17th July.

The fire badly scorched a number of trees in the park. It also destroyed much of a “dead hedge” created to be a wildlife sanctuary. It’s not clear how it started.

The Friends of Churchill Gardens is a group of local people who volunteer to undertake practical work in the city park. They have been working to open up one of the more overgrown and secluded areas close to Churchill House. It was in this area that the fire took hold.

Councillor Ben Proctor is the local councillor. He said:

“I’d like to thank the Fire Service for their quick response. The damage could easily have been much worse.”

“Churchill Gardens is a popular park. It’s a green lung in quite an urban part of the city and is heavily used. That does lead to some problems with anti-social behaviour that I am working with the police and council to address.

There is an especially secluded area of the park which particularly attracts problems.

The Friends of Churchill Gardens made a good start in the spring, cutting back the shrubs and trees in this area. This incident shows there’s plenty more to be done in the autumn.”
