Up to 73 workers at Special Metals Wiggin could lose their jobs after the company announced that it was set to make further job cuts due to a fall in workload. The company also made over 100 redundancies earlier this year at its site in Hereford.

A letter sent to employees says that the proposed manning reductions are therefore based on where the company is faced with low sales and the need to reduce costs and restructure to resize the company to match the level of sales.

Nearly half (32) of the redundancies will come from the operational side of the business.

Consultation with recognised trade unions will commence immediately and ‘at risk’ staff will be consulted after the period of collective consolation. In the meantime, the company is prepared to consider volunteers for redundancy from all areas of the business.
