The number of patients being treated for COVID-19 at hospital in Herefordshire has risen.
Cases of the Delta variant have risen significantly in Herefordshire over recent weeks, with 81 cases of COVID-19 recorded in Herefordshire in the seven days ending 19th June.
This increase in cases locally has led to Hereford County Hospital seeing an increase in the number of patients being treated for COVID-19. Latest data released by NHS England shows that as of 22nd June, three patients were being treated for COVID-19 at hospital in Herefordshire, up from zero the previous week. One patient was being treated on a mechanical ventilator on the 22nd June, this is up from zero the week before.
It should be noted that these numbers remain far below the peak of the outbreak in Herefordshire at the start of this year, when well over 100 patients were being treated for COVID-19 at Hereford County Hospital. Wye Valley NHS Trust even had to double the size of the intensive care ward to cope with the increasing number of patients requiring ventilation.
This time round, it is hoped that the successful rollout of the COVID-19 vaccines will limit the number of patients requiring hospitalisation and also limit the severity of the disease for those admitted to hospital.
