Secretary of State for Education Gavin Williamson will make a statement in the Commons at around 3.30pm this afternoon according to reports on Sky News.
The news comes as the government comes under pressure to delay the return of pupils after Christmas to slow the rapid increase in infections of COVID-19, including the new variant that is sweeping across parts of the United Kingdom.
As things stand, primary pupils and older secondary and college pupils in England will return for face-to-face learning on 4 January with all other students going back a week later.
