Matt Hancock appeared on Sky News this morning and said that the government is prepared to bring in local action “wherever we think is necessary”.
The health secretary added the virus is “clearly accelerating across the country”.
Asked if there will be a second national lockdown, he replied: “We will do what is necessary to keep people safe.”
Mr Hancock said a second national lockdown would be a “last line of defence”.
The health secretary said “the approach the government takes is to protect lives and livelihoods”,
He added: “Sometimes we can’t say what the future holds because we are in a pandemic.”
Mr Hancock went on to say the country can “control the virus” if people “come together”.
