West Mercia Police officers continue to carry out night time patrols near the River Wye in Hereford, following reports of a number of sexual offences in the area over recent weeks.
Your Herefordshire has been pressing West Mercia Police for an update and yesterday a spokesperson for West Mercia Police confirmed that there currently was ‘no further information available, other than that already released’.
The latest report of an offence came in the early hours of last Saturday (20th August) when a 35 year old man was arrested.
West Mercia Police releases the following statement earlier this week saying:
“A man was arrested on suspicion of rape on Saturday and has been released on bail.
Officers patrolling the area following recent reports were approached by a male victim near Victoria Bridge in Hereford.
“A 35-year-old male suspect was arrested shortly after the report being made.”
Hereford Chief Inspector Ross Jones said:
“Increased patrols by both uniformed and plain clothes officers will continue along the river path, particularly during the late evening and overnight.
“Our patrols were able to respond to this report immediately, leading to the arrest of a 35-year-old male”
Superintendent Damian Pettit, said:
“I’m aware that there have been previous reports of incidents along the river path in recent weeks. Understandably this may cause concern within the local community.
“I completely understand these concerns and can confirm that our increased patrols along the river paths and local area continue.
“At present this incident is not being linked to the previous offences in the area, however we keep an open mind during the thorough investigations being undertaken.”
