36-year-old Carwyn Phillips, from Merthyr Tydfil, car was spotted on Cyfarthfa Retail Park Roundabout by PC Saunders who was aware of the vehicle due to Phillips being wanted for an unrelated offence.

On Thursday January 8, 2025, whilst on patrol PC Saunders, signalled Phillips to stop, which he ignored.

The road conditions at the time were severe, with an amber weather warning and roads covered in ice and snow.

During the pursuit, Phillips stopped briefly before two back seat passengers exited the vehicle.

Phillips continued his attempt to evade by driving the wrong way up the A470. This prompted PC Saunders to conduct a tactical contact to stop the car.

The car came to a stop after colliding with the side of the police car before Phillips attempted to escape by jumping down the banking on the side of the road.

After a short search, Phillips was found by officers hiding in a bush and arrested on suspicion of GBH, failing to stop, disqualified driving and dangerous driving.

On Monday February 9 at Cardiff Crown Court after pleading guilty to all offences, he was sentenced to 14 months in prison and banned from driving for 10 years and seven months.

Police Constable Ashley Saunders said:

“Carwyn’s dangerous driving caused threat to the public, the police and himself, especially with the conditions being as bad as they were”

“It was only a matter of time before his choices caught up with him and he was arrested”
