Over recent weeks, students across the United Kingdom have been blamed for COVID-19 outbreaks in towns and cities, particularly those with universities.
In Hereford, the number of cases at colleges in the city has remained low but Hereford Sixth Form College has recorded two positive cases this week. Students have been quick to defend the college however, stating that staff are working very hard to keep them safe.
Hereford Sixth Form student Martin Koveckis has commented saying that the college is doing ‘all it can’ to keep students and staff safe and that he believes students are getting unfair criticism.
He said:
“Since the start of the academic year every single person in the college (unless medically exempt) has had to wear a mask in the college buildings. Before entering any of the buildings we have to sanitize our hands.
“If we enter a social space where classes mix we have to scan into the room using our ID’s for track and trace purposes. Our lunch breaks have been cut down to 30 minutes and every classroom has its lunch time at a different time to prevent interaction.
“All the corridors are one way systems (except for some that are wide enough to be two way). Multiple shelters have been built so that students can stay outside while still having cover from the weather and all our desks are sanitized after every lesson.”
