Health Secretary Sajid Javid will hold a news conference later today.
It comes as the government is under severe pressure from scientists to take action over rising cases and the AY4.2 variant that is predicted to make up around 6% of total sequenced cases in the United Kingdom at present.
Cases are rapidly rising in areas of the UK at present with close to 50,000 cases being recorded daily.
