The Courtyard is pleased to announce that the Cultivate@Courtyard Visual Arts Project will be exhibited online.
Cultivate, now in its third year, is a Courtyard Visual Arts project aimed at young emerging artists aged 16–25, with a link to Herefordshire. Shortlisted artists are given the opportunity to work towards an exhibition with a professional mentor and there is a cash prize for the artist it is felt has best met the brief.
The exhibition, which was originally scheduled to open in May, was postponed due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Professional mentor, Maria Morgan continued virtually mentoring the young artists during the lockdown period to create their pieces, which will now be presented in a Virtual Exhibition, aptly renamed Cultivate@Home.
Freya Bain, Elizabeth Helder, Lauren Nicholson-Little and Josh Sankey all live, and study, in Hereford and were shortlisted from applications in 2019. Their disciplines range from printing press, photography, enamelling, line drawing and more.
“For any artist, creating work for an exhibition is a challenging experience; but there can surely be no bigger challenge than making work during the Covid-19 pandemic.” says David Durant, Associate Director.“However, it is with great pride that we are able to welcome people to view 2019/20 Cultivate Exhibition virtually. The artists have worked tirelessly, guided by the ever hard-working and inspirational Maria Morgan. I hope you will enjoy the work and see it as a testament that no matter what comes our way, artists really are made of sterner stuff!”
Maria Morgan, Project Co-ordinator, says: “Throughout Freya, Josh, Lauren and Lizzie have continued to push the boundaries, with a desire to create exciting new artworks. Embracing this opportunity to develop their individual inventive visual expression through excellent command of media, techniques and understanding of concepts.“
