Whether it’s a nappy blowout at the worst possible time, or discovering baby spit up on your clothes (or hair!) when you’re out, all new mums and dads experience their fair share of parenting mishaps.
This was certainly the case for Ring customer and new mum, Lily Gilbert.
The 28-year-old from Hereford, recently shared footage from her Ring Video Doorbellof her newborn, Winnie, releasing an incredibly loud poonami at the exact moment Lily had opened the door to an unsuspecting charity representative.
Discussing the moment with Ring, Lily said, “I was in total shock at first and didn’t know what to do! When I watched the video back I found it absolutely hilarious and had to send it to my husband straight away.”
A ‘poonami’ occurs when a baby’s bowl movement is of such a large quantity and consistency that no nappy stands a chance of containing it.
Lily’s advice to any parents who experience the same thing is, “Just laugh and have plenty of baby wipes to hand!”.
Comedian and new mum, Kelly Convey, also understands these incidents all too well herself and has teamed up with home security company, Ring, to share her top tips for other new parents that are navigating busy lives.
Last year Kelly took to TikTok to share her own hilarious ‘doorstop mishap’. She had been breastfeeding her newborn when she answered the door, and it wasn’t until later that she realised she hadn’t pulled her top back down.
When she phoned to tell her husband, it turned out he already knew what happened as the delivery driver had snapped a photo of the parcel delivery, accidentally capturing her naked breast at the same time. Kelly’s video has now been viewed over 8.9 million times with fellow parents sharing their own mortifying, but amusing, tales in the comments.
Speaking about the constant unexpected moments of parenthood, Kelly says: “As a new parent you’re constantly navigating a minefield of hilarious and embarrassing moments. From midnight nappy disasters to terribly timed spit-ups, it is never a dull moment. It is important to embrace the mess, celebrate the little wins and enjoy every wild, wonderful moment as it goes by faster than you think!”
One of the best ways to get through parenting is by taking advice from those who have been there before. Kelly shares some of her top tips for all the new mums and dads out there:
- Everything is a phase: These moments will go by fast! You will sleep again! You’ll also one day hear them pronounce a word properly that they’ve always got wrong. Document those little words and embrace the no-sleep chic for now, it’ll pass.
- Pack the night before: Whether it’s just popping out to baby sensory or you’re going on a road trip. Pack everything the night before – tomorrow’s ‘you’, will thank you. The two or three times I’ve actually managed to follow this advice in the three years of being a mother, it’s been such a blessing.
- Make the most of your tech: Devices like my Ring Video Doorbell are a god send. Not having to get up to answer the door is great, but being able to pretend I’m not home when my mother-in-law comes by with some “advice” that was outlawed in the 80s is priceless.
Parents can take advantage of different features from Ring Video Doorbell, including snoozing Chime alerts for a set time so visitors won’t disturb nap time, or use Live View to check who’s at the door without having to leave your newborn’s side.
