It’s been an incredibly difficult year for us all, particularly those working the care sector, including Michelle Baker who works for Elgar Care. Michelle’s colleagues Tracey and Laura have said that Michelle has been working so hard during the pandemic but on 6th November 2020, she was dealt a devastating blow when she was diagnosed with breast cancer.
Despite this devastating news, Michelle remains positive and confident and is determined to win this battle, with the support of her colleagues.
Tracey and Laura have decided to brave the shave to help raise money for the Macmillan Renton Unit at Hereford County Hospital and the pair will be setting up a fundraising page early next week, which we’ll share on our social platforms. They will be braving the shave on 13th April so there is plenty of time to support them!
Here is Michelle’s story. (From the Elgar Care Facebook Page)
Hello my name is Michelle Baker and i am a senior carer at Elgar Care.
On 6th November last year I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. The month following that was a whirlwind, I had the operation to have the lump removed the 28th November and I then started my chemotherapy on the 6th January.
This time of my life was upside down and frustrating. I now have to sit at home and ponder, rather than being out caring for others. I’ve been supported throughout this with my amazing family, friends and work colleagues.
One night my manager called me to check if I was ok, I wasn’t, I was a blubbering wreck and was starting to lose my hair due to the chemotherapy. They told me from the start they would kick this with me, and said “we’ll go bald together”, I was speechless and cried more.
I am hoping “my story” will not only raise awareness that this can happen to anyone, but also with them braving the shave for me, it will raise lots of money for a great cause. I am fighting this and have just had my 4th lot of chemo and will come out of this stronger than I’ve ever been.
