A 14-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of murder after the body of a teenage girl was discovered in Blaina, Gwent Police have confirmed.

Officers were called to the Duffryn Park area at around 10.10pm on Monday, June 22, where the body of a female was found.

The teenager, who is from the Blaenau Gwent area, remains in police custody while detectives continue their investigation.

Formal identification has not yet taken place. However, police said the family of Lilly, a 14-year-old girl who had previously been reported missing, has been informed of the development. Specially trained officers are continuing to provide support to her relatives.

Detective Chief Inspector Steven Thomas, the senior investigating officer leading the inquiry, said police are maintaining a significant presence in the area as investigations continue.

“We continue to have a significant police presence in the area and understand the concern amongst our communities at this time,” he said.

“Our enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the death and we currently have one person in police custody being questioned.”

Detectives are appealing for anyone with information about the incident to come forward.

DCI Thomas added: “I’d also encourage people not to speculate online as this is a live investigation and such comments can have an impact on our ability to bring anyone, found to have committed a criminal offence, to justice.”

Gwent Police also confirmed that the incident has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) in line with normal procedures.
