By James Townley:

Herefordshire racing driver Aaron Walker will be competing in the British GT Championship this season and he will get his 2026 campaign underway this weekend.

At just 20 years old, Walker will be back competing in the UK for the first time since 2022 after progressing his career in Europe and Asia. The British GT Championship is widely regarded as the UK’s top sportscar series, featuring GT3 and GT4 machinery.

Walker started his career karting at Herefordshire-based Kinsham Raceway at the end of 2015, attending the circuit with his dad. From there, he progressed rapidly and was competing in the British Karting Championship by 2017.

After a successful period in karting, where he won multiple championships both in the UK and abroad while representing the county at national and international level, he and his family weighed up the next steps in his career.

Whilst many young drivers aspire to enter single-seater racing at a young age, Walker explained why he chose to go down the GT racing route:

“Unfortunately in motorsport nowadays with the cost of everything, we sat down and looked at it seriously on the pros and cons of going both ways. Obviously everyone’s dream would be to do the single-seater route and try and get to F1, but nowadays with motorsport that would mean so much money to get to that point, more than talent necessarily.

“So we debated having a good crack in single-seaters but how long would that last and would that be able to ultimately create a career for me going forward? GT racing is a lot more affordable for people getting into it and it’s still obviously a great opportunity to create a career in racing for massive manufacturers and big racers.”

Like most drivers coming through the ranks, getting to that next level wasn’t just about talent, with the support around him back home playing a huge part in his progression.

“With motorsport nowadays even more than before, you obviously need big family backing and sponsorship as well from other people. It’s been extremely important to have a good solid family around me to help me progress in this.”

After opting for the GT route, Walker was given the opportunity in 2022 to test a GT car with 2 Seas Motorsport and, at just 16 years old, competed in a one-off race for the team in the final round of British GT Championship, driving a Mercedes-AMG GT3.

After finishing his karting career that year, he announced his first full season in GT racing in 2023, competing in both the GT World Challenge and the GT Open series.

Following a strong first season, Walker has spent the past two years racing across Europe and Asia. He notably won the 24 Hours of Spa in 2024 and finished runner-up in the GT Open Pro-Am championship last season, picking up four wins and seven podiums across eight rounds.

This season, Walker returns to where it all started in the British GT Championship, rejoining his former team and reigning champions, 2 Seas Motorsport. He will partner Kenzie Beecroft this season and race a familiar Mercedes-AMG GT3. Speaking on reuniting with the team, he said:

“I’ve known the guys at 2 Seas for a long time, it’s almost like coming back home. I still see a lot of the recognisable faces I know from years ago, which takes a bit of pressure off. It’s a very friends and family-run team in a way. Everyone gets on exactly like you would with your mates. I think that brings a better environment to the team and takes off the pressure from you. I can’t wait to get back with them.”

Speaking about what it means to represent Herefordshire at a high level of motorsport, Walker added:

“I’m very proud to represent the county. It’s very big. I definitely think we need more motorsport in Herefordshire, which it seems like there has been in the past few years. There’s a good few younger lads doing karting. I’d definitely like more drivers in Herefordshire to get into it. I feel like a good bit of representation for the county would be great. I certainly hope that people will read this or other stuff in the past and see it and get into it themselves.”

The championship gets underway this weekend at Silverstone, located just over two hours away from Herefordshire, with Walker targeting a strong start to the season.

“We’d definitely be looking to take the Silver Pro-Am championship, which would be nice to do, and ultimately to challenge overall as well. Everyone doesn’t like to show their hand too much [in pre-season testing], but we’ve got a good car and a good baseline. Obviously that’s always going to be the aim, to go for wins overall, and we’ll find out this weekend,” he said.

At just 20 years old, Walker has already made a name for himself in GT racing and shared his aspirations for the future.

“The ultimate goal for me would be to become a factory driver for a manufacturer team and to race at Le Mans.”

You can follow Walker’s progress throughout the season, with this weekend’s action available to watch live online. Qualifying will take place on Saturday before the three-hour endurance race opens the 2026 British GT Championship.
