Malvern St James School has announced that it could close by the end of the academic year.

A statement shared on its website said:

“It is with great sadness that the Management Board of Malvern St James is proposing to close the school at the end of this academic year.

“Over a number of years, and despite sustained efforts by the school to secure its future, Malvern St James has experienced a significant and continuing decline in pupil numbers.

“This has been driven by a combination of national and local factors.

“Nationally, the introduction of VAT on school fees and increased employment costs have placed considerable pressure on the independent sector.

“Locally, the small class sizes and highly individualised education that are so valued by our parents and pupils mean that the school’s current model has become increasingly difficult to sustain.

“Subject to consultation with staff, the Board is proposing a planned and orderly closure during which supporting our pupils, families and staff will be our absolute priority.

“Protecting pupils in examination years is especially important to us, and careful arrangements will be put in place to ensure their education and preparation are unaffected.

“Malvern St James has a proud and distinctive history, and we are committed to honouring its legacy and the community that has shaped it.

“While we are not yet able to confirm future plans, we remain committed to acting responsibly and thoughtfully.

“Our focus – now and always – remains on our pupils.”
