A 16-year-old Malvern College pupil has signed his first professional contract with Warwickshire Cricket Club.
Charlie Taylor, who is studying for his GCSEs, is widely regarded as one of the most exciting young cricketers in the country, having been selected for the England U19 squad at the age of just 15.
Charlie, a bowler, has signed a two-year rookie contract which comes into effect from July 1, and will then be extended by a full-time professional contract until the end of the 2028 season.
Having grown up just inside the Warwickshire border, Charlie began his cricketing journey at the age of seven with Alcester & Ragley Cricket Club, where he progressed through every junior age group and went on to represent the club across senior cricket.
At eight he was in the county’s youth setup. His talent quickly became evident, and through dedication, discipline, and a deep passion for the game, he has progressed through every stage of the Warwickshire pathway.
Coaches have described him as a natural fast bowler with enormous potential.
Charlie’s development has been supported by expert coaching both at Malvern College and within Warwickshire’s professional setup, where he trains alongside former professionals and elite players.
Charlie said: “I’m incredibly proud and excited to have signed with Warwickshire. It’s something I’ve worked towards for a long time, and I’m really grateful to my family, coaches and everyone at Malvern College for their support along the way. I’m looking forward to learning as much as I can and pushing myself to improve in the years ahead.”
Keith Metcalfe, Headmaster at Malvern College, said: “The whole school wishes to extend its congratulations to Charlie on this incredibly exciting move. As one of the school’s ‘role models’, Charlie exudes the qualities we seek to instill in all of our young people and he is a real credit to himself and the college.”
Mark Hardinges, Director of Sport, added: “We are delighted for Charlie – this is just reward for all the hard work he has put in over many years. Charlie is not just an accomplished sportsman, he is also a lovely young man, and we look forward to supporting him in any way possible to help him make the most of this opportunity.”
James Thomas, Warwickshire Cricket Performance Director, said: “Developing players through the Warwickshire Pathway and into the first team is a key objective here at Warwickshire and we are therefore delighted to secure the signing of Charlie.
“Charlie is one of the most promising young players in English cricket and we have high hopes for him. Warwickshire has a proven track record of bringing players through the pathway, the latest of which being Jacob Bethell and Dan Mousley, and we want to give Charlie the environment and the tools to make the most of his potential in the years to come.”
Beyond cricket, Charlie is also an accomplished squash and rackets player, demonstrating the agility, quick reflexes, and competitive spirit that underpin his sporting success.
Charlie’s ultimate ambition is to establish himself in the Warwickshire first team and pursue a long-term professional career in cricket.
