Leominster is on the lookout for an unusual job role, an ‘ale taster’ ….

Leominster Town records show that in the 16th and 17th centuries the town employed two Fish-tasters, Bread-weighers and Ale-tasters whose job it was to ensure that the food and drink available for sale was healthy and potable.
These individuals were unpaid but received recompense in kind from the vendors.
Most English towns had equivalent staff members, and some (Ashburton, Devon; Alcester) still have them or have revived the posts in modern times. They are used largely as entertainment at the beginning of town fairs and festivals.
Leominster has agreed to revive these historic posts. Initially only one of each will be appointed and are expected to be in place for the beginning of the Council Year in May.
The posts will be unpaid but costumes, badges and Town Livery will be provided.
In addition to their traditional role the appointees are expected to acquaint themselves fully with their roles to the point where they would be able to explain the importance of healthy food and the processes by which it came, and comes, to be offered for sale.
