UK government confirms social gatherings of over 6 people, both indoors and outdoors, will be banned in England from Monday, to try and control the spread of Covid-19.

Boris Johnson: “We are simplifying and strengthening the rules on social contact – making them easier to understand and for the police to enforce.”

Any gathering of over six people in England will be illegal (except for certain exemptions).

There will be exemptions to the six-person limit on social gatherings in England, including:

  • Where household or support bubble is more than six
  • Gatherings for work or education purposes
  • Weddings
  • Funerals
  • Organised team sports

The full list of exemptions will be revealed by the government before the law changes on Monday.

First offenders will be fined ÂŁ100, which will double on each further repeat offence up to ÂŁ3,200, the prime minister will announce in a bid to stem an alarming surge in COVID-19 cases in the UK.
