Building on their recent successes in the FA Disability Cup, the College team, with the Football Association’s backing, is the only English club taking part and will face five other European clubs – Borussia Dortmund (Germany), Cécifoot Charleroi (Belgium), ASDD Roma 2000 (Italy), Sanremo Liguria (Italy), and the Romanian National Team.
Each country will host a weekend tournament. The competition starts in Italy this month (10 and 11 December) with RNC Hereford scheduled to host the competition in April 2023 at thePoint4 leisure facility.
The League will conclude in June 2023 in Belgium, with a closing ceremony at the home of Cécifoot Charleroi, which will coincide with the club’s tenth anniversary.
It is hoped that this tournament will provide those taking part with the platform to share good practice and fair play as well as opportunities for player development. Ultimately, the goal is to get more people involved in this fast paced and skilled game.
RNC has a proven track record of developing players, many of whom end up playing for their country.
Adam Bendall, England Coach and Sports Teacher at RNC, said:
“We’re really excited to have some of the best, young, emerging talent in our country representing RNC and England in this innovative new competition. We’re also looking forward to competing against some excellent European teams, which will give our players a unique opportunity to develop tactically, technically and as people.”
Blind football is a popular spectator sport and each of the matches will be streamed live via YouTube. The League is currently looking for an overall sponsor, but at a lower level, Team RNC are on the lookout for shirt sponsors for the duration of the tournament and for perimeter board advertisers for the Hereford leg of the competition.
