Football legend Sir Bobby Charlton sadly passed away yesterday aged 86.
Charlton won the World Cup with England in 1966 and the European Cup with Manchester United in 1968. After he left Old Trafford in 1973 he then moved into management at Preston North End and combined the role with playing. This is where he would cross paths with Hereford United.
On the 5th October 1974 Charlton’s Preston team drew 2-2 with Hereford United at Edgar Street in front of a crowd of 11,488. The below photograph shows Charlton in the background as David Rudge scores with a clever lob.
In the return game at Deepdale the game also ended 2-2. Here are Charlton’s programme notes that afternoon.
Charlton would return to Edgar Street in early 1992. By then he was running a soccer school and due to his friendship with Hereford United manager John Sillett he came down to Edgar Street and coached a group of school children from St Thomas Cantilupe School.
After the coaching session was completed. Charlton and Sillett enjoyed a beverage in the Vice Presidents Club.
