Hereford Cathedral Junior School had a day to remember as they became the County Primary School’s Football Champions in an event held at Wyeside.
28 schools and over 250 children took part in the tournament with early morning rain disappearing leading to conditions ideal for passing football.
Split into eight groups, there were lots of closely fought games with many of the groups being decided by goal difference and lots of smaller schools competing well.
In the Bowl, last year’s champions Brockhampton came out top in a five team mini league whilst in the Plate, it was Hereford Cathedral Junior School B who defeated Kingsland 1–0 to make it a double delight for the city school.
In the Cup competition, the bigger city schools featured heavily with smaller schools Stoke Prior and Cradley making great progress themselves. Whilst a rampant St Paul’s defeated Lord Scudamore in their semi final, Hereford Cathedral Junior School survived a shot that come off the post and a clearance off the line to defeat a brave Stoke Prior on penalties.
In the final, Hereford Cathedral Junior School took the lead in the first half with a neat back post finish and defended gallantly as St Paul’s threw everything at them to grab an equaliser.
Both sides played entertaining football but when St Paul’s missed a late penalty, Hereford Cathedral Junior School were able to see the game out and become the first school to win the trophy three times.
