Top of the table. Unbeaten. What a season Westfields Football Club are having and we’ve been speaking to forward Aidan Thomas about the season so far.
Q) Top of the league. Unbeaten. What a season your having?
A) It’s been a great season so far but of course nothing is won yet. We were unfortunate to not have a big cup run this year but it has probably helped in the fact we’ve had no distractions and the lads have been different class. I know how hard it is to win a league (having tried for 9 years) and having come extremely close before we’ve got to make sure we just keep ticking the points over and then see what happens.
Q) We’ve been impressed with your performances when we’ve been at matches this season. Would you say this is the best season you’ve had so far at Westfields?
A) Thanks, I’d definitely say it’s up there. This is my 9th season with Westfields now and we have had some great times but I’d say I am probably playing some of my best football this year. I’ve already beaten my best goal tally so hopefully I can just keep my form going and help the team continue with the good performances.
Q) There appears to be a good team spirit at the club. Is this thanks to the management team?
A) Yeah, definitely. The team spirit this year has been first class and this is credit to Phil Glover and the management team in getting the right players in as well as keeping hold of the core from last season. Everyone has been brilliant this year, there’s a real togetherness in the dressing room and it is probably one of, if not the strongest squads we have had.
Q) Could you go the whole season unbeaten or do you take it one game at a time?
A) I know it sounds cliche but we have to just take each game as it comes and see where it takes us. We’ve been guilty in years gone by of building up big leads and taking our foot off the gas a bit. I think that has helped in keeping the focus this year. The next game is always the most important. It’d be great to end the season unbeaten but none of the lads are even thinking about it, promotion is our main focus.
Q) Which teammate have you been most impressed with this season?
A) Difficult to pick out just one as every one of the lads has been great this season but if I had to, I’d say Billy Murphy. He’s added serious quality to an already brilliant midfield and most importantly loves a beer even more than me!
Westfields take on Tuffley Rovers this evening.
