Torrential downpours and frequent lightning are both possible, as a short lived heatwave across Herefordshire comes to an end with a bang.

Temperatures have reached highs of 29c in Herefordshire over recent days, but that is set to change.

The Met Office has issued a weather warning for Herefordshire on Thursday, but it is possible that some downpours could affect the area as early as later this afternoon.

Parts of Devon and Cornwall have already seen thunderstorms this morning, with these expected to track north-eastwards over the next 48 hours.

The Met Office warning for Herefordshire (Valid 11am-8pm Thursday 9th September):

“Following overnight rain and showers, more intense showers and thunderstorms are expected to break out fairly widely from late-morning, before easing during the evening.

“Whilst most areas will miss the most intense storms, torrential downpours are possible in a few places. Where these occur, there is potential for 20 to 30 mm of rain in less than an hour and up to 40 mm in 2 hours.

“This would have the potential to generate surface water flooding, especially if it falls over an urban area.”
