A SmartTag system has been launched at bars and clubs in Hereford to help to act as a deterrent to limit nighttime disorder in the city centre.

The launch event took place yesterday evening at Saxtys on Widemarsh Street.

Door staff will be equipped with the liquid spray, and in the event of disorder or an incident, they can spray the liquid and then the perpetrator can be clearly identified at other venues or by West Mercia Police officers by the use of a UV torch.

Dave from Smart Water (Police relationship manager) explained that the forensic marking liquid is unique and the main use is to act as a major deterrent to criminals/those likely to cause disorder.

The liquid has a range of 8-10 metres and people who are concerned that surrounding people could be sprayed can be assured that it is clearly visible who the main target of the spray was aimed at when a person is put under UV lighting.

SmartWater is a powerful deterrent as it provides the police with the evidence they need to prosecute, and a number of criminals are behind bars as a result. SmartWater also has a 100% conviction record and therefore you can see why West Mercia Police are very much in favour of the use of it.

Edd Williams from West Mercia Police said that the nighttime economy had been through a tough and unique time over the past 18 months and anything that can make it safer should be seized upon. Edd went on to say that he doesn’t think West Mercia Police have ever had a better relationship with pubs/clubs and licensees.

The scheme has been a huge success in other parts of the country, including in Sheffield, where a 40% reduction in disorder at venues has been recorded since it’s introduction in the city. It will be used to target those that cause trouble and to make it a safer place for those that enjoy a beer and something to eat.
