Herefordshire Council’s Cabinet agreed today (Thursday 22 June) to pause the project to relocate Hereford library so that all options for its future location can be reviewed and assessed.
Hereford library is moving to allow the building in Broad Street to be redeveloped into an exciting, modern, museum and art gallery.
There had been proposals for the library to move to Maylord Orchards centre. However, since plans for the move were first developed in 2020, there have been changes in demand for retail and commercial space, the draft Hereford City Masterplan has identified a wide range of future needs for sites in the city centre, and alternative locations have become available for redevelopment.
Councillor Harry Bramer, cabinet member community services and assets, said: “As part of plans to develop a strategy for city-wide rejuvenation, the new council administration is taking the opportunity to review the options for the relocation of Hereford library. We want to ensure it really is in the best place so that it can reach its full potential as a first class learning environment.
“The exciting project to transform the museum at Broad St is progressing, so both the library and museum service will be moving out to allow the refurbishment work to take place. Hereford Library will be temporarily based at Friars Street until moving into its permanent new home.”

The review is expected to be completed by the end of July 2023.
