The successful vaccine rollout is beginning to show in the latest COVID-19 figures, with ZERO COVID-19 cases recorded in those aged 70 and over in Herefordshire in the seven day period ending 26th May.
In truth, cases are low in all age groups, with an infection rate in Herefordshire of just 12.4 cases per 100,000 population, meaning that around 20 people have tested positive in the county for COVID-19 in the past seven days.
The figures are particularly pleasing, with no evidence so far that the COVID-19 variant that was first seen in India is affecting the elderly population of the county. The Indian variant is now the dominant strain in much of the United Kingdom, but is mainly affecting the younger population that are yet to be vaccinated, or have limited protection due to only just having a vaccine.
The age group with the highest COVID-19 infection rate in Herefordshire is the 20-24 year olds, with an infection rate of 68.6 cases per 100,000 population. However, it should be stated that in data released last week, Hereford County Hospital wasn’t treating any COVID-19 patients and deaths remain very low.
