Back in November of last year we spoke to local pensioner Richard Smith who was disgusted with the government for scrapping the £300 fuel allowance -> NEWS | Hereford pensioner slams the government for scrapping the winter fuel allowance – Herefordshire’s Independent Source of News & Information
We spoke to Richard again today who is still livid with the decision.
71 year old Richard who lives in the Whitecross area told Your Herefordshire “I knew this would happen with the weather this winter being cold when they cut they fuel allowance, its sods law as I don’t remember it being this cold since the beast from the east in 2018”
Richard continues “We had a wintry November with snow and freezing temperatures. To be honest December was fairly mild for the time of year and I didn’t need to put the heating on too much, but January so far this year has been absolutely arctic with sub zero temperatures most days”
Richard added “It’s come back to haunt the government this decision to scrap the fuel allowance, pensioners are terrified of putting the heating on as the costs are just going up and up, then I see on the television that hospitals are full with winter illnesses, this then has a knock on effect as the NHS is put under extreme pressure and my friend told me this morning that the waiting list in Hereford A&E is taking a long time”
Richard is notably angry with the situation “The increasing population in the country due to immigration is ridiculous, more people are coming over illegally on boats and costing the country money which could be spent on looking after pensioners in this country, we just don’t have the infrastructure in the hospitals and GP surgeries to cope with the influx, its like football stadiums and nightclubs have a safe capacity to stop overcrowding, but the amount of people coming over to this country needs to be capped and the boats turned back, the situation has got hugely out of control, we are only a small island with so much space and our resources and infrastructure are being totally overwhelmed”
The temperatures are expected to continue to plummet the next few days before slowly warming up next week.
Richard continued “I’m so fed up and frustrated, I’m just sick and tired of this government wasting money on silly projects like net zero and sending money all over the world to other countries, but then not looking after pensioners in the UK who have paid taxes all their life, as I said before in the other interview that you did with me I was expecting the Labour Government to look after us pensioners, it absolutely disgusts me that people will freeze to death this winter for the sake of £300”
