West Mercia Police is tackling male violence against women and girls by extending their safer streets initiative into a Christmas and New Year campaign.
CAPTION: L-R Inspector Julie Watson and Superintendent Edd Williams in Hereford Town centre ahead of the Safer Streets campaign across Christmas and New Year campaign to tackle male violence against women and girls.
As part of the Home Office initiative to target violence and fear of violence against Women and Girls (VAWG) in public spaces, Herefordshire have implemented a high visibility audio and visual campaign with the aims to raise awareness within our communities of the importance of challenging inappropriate behaviour.
The Herefordshire Safer Streets Project – a collaboration between Partners including West Mercia Police, Herefordshire Council, Purple Leaf, Herefordshire Women’s Equality Group, Vennture and West Mercia Women’s Aid – has developed a Christmas and New Year campaign with the key aims to appeal to bystanders to report unacceptable behaviour; to raise awareness for women and girls to report and signpost to support services; and encourage bystanders to recognise violence against women and girls and give confidence to safely intervene.
The Safer Streets project has overseen a number of activities across the region since 2021 and supports communities within Herefordshire through education, workshops, CCTV installation, street lighting and landscaping vegetation in public spaces.
Superintendent Edd Williams says: “The Safer Streets project is a brilliant investment, aiming to support the end to male violence against women and girls in Herefordshire. This phase has begun with a Christmas and New Year campaign using both audio and visual media.
Along with our partners, the project has also enabled us to deliver an education programme to students, cadets and members of the night-time economy staff, plus work with street pastors, an increase in CCTV capacity, the landscaping of a number of areas, and more.”
It’s time to end male violence against women and girls.
