An urgent warning has been issued to residents in Herefordshire, after fire crews were called to a number of uncontrolled fires in the county on Wednesday.
A message shared by Leominster Fire Station said:
“We were called to attend to 3 uncontrolled fires in open spaces yesterday in our surrounding area.
“All 3 of our appliances have been out and utilised by crews, to shuttle around water and crew members.
“Whilst the intentions were genuine, and common practise to a couple of occupiers, it isn’t a good idea during these extremely hot and dry conditions.
“With tree canopies, hedgerows and crops pre heated with these extreme temperatures, plus containing so little moisture, a fire can very quickly and easily get out of control in the countryside.
“The slightest change of conditions will affect the fire’s behaviour.
“One fire yesterday was started accidentally by hot works being carried out – in this case, sparks from an angle grinder. Please think of the surrounding environment before commencing with this type of work.”
