The United Kingdom has recorded its highest number of daily COVID-19 cases since the start of the pandemic back in March 2020, with a total of 78,610 new cases recorded today.
Data shows that the Omicron variant is rapidly spreading, particularly in areas such as London and the South East, with it now being the dominant strain in many areas.
4,671 additional confirmed cases of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 have been reported across the UK. Confirmed Omicron cases in the UK now total 10,017.
In Herefordshire, the increase in cases is currently much slower, with a total of 113 new cases being recorded, although there are signs that the COVID-19 infection rate is starting to rise here as well.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson will take part in a press conference from Downing Street at 5pm but his main focus is expected to be on the rollout of booster jabs, rather than bringing in any further measures to slow the spread of COVID-19,
