All the talk of vaccines is positive but we should not forget that we are in the midst of a serious second wave of COVID-19 and that many more people will sadly die this winter.

That’s what we are being reminded of this morning, after the United Kingdom passed the grim milestone of 50,000 COVID-19 related deaths yesterday.

More than 50,000 people have now died with coronavirus in the UK, according to the latest figures from public health agencies across the UK.

ONS figures paint a worse picture. They collect data that puts the number of people who have died from COVID at more than 60,000.

The ONS collects figures on deaths when COVID was mentioned on the death certificate.

There were more than 18,000 COVID-related deaths in care homes between the week ending 13 March and the week ending 30 October.
