Jesse Norman (MP for Hereford & Herefordshire South) and Bill Wiggin (MP for North Herefordshire) both voted in favour of the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill yesterday evening.
MPs voted 359 to 263, a majority of 96, at the second reading and it is now a step closer to becoming law.
However, this Bill has been controversial, with many members of the public and opposition politicians worried that this could put an end to ‘peaceful protests’ and limit free speech.
However those supporting it back it mainly because of increased sentencing for crimes such as assaulting an emergency services worker, scrapping the automatic release halfway through a sentence of serious, violent sexual offenders and also increasing punishments for those found guilty of terrorism offences.
There was plenty of reaction on our social media feeds yesterday evening. Here is a selection of the comments….
Rob Edwards: “Always a headline when these two actually do something! No more peaceful protests!”
Sharon Keeley: “They’d never vote against the Tory whip – I bet they would say they’re in favour of free speech – as long as it coincides with their point of view.”
Laura Ding-Edwards: “In other news water is wet. Wouldn’t expect anything less.”
JJ Kent: “Ah the woke left speaks again, half of which probably haven’t even read what they’ve voted for in depth.”
Christopher Royles: “The Tories will be coming for social media next.”
