COVID-19 cases are once again on the rise in Herefordshire, with 81 cases recorded in the seven day period ending 19th June. This is significantly up on the 56 cases recorded in the county in the seven day period ending 12th June. However, it’s not all bad news.
Hospitalisations remain low in Herefordshire, with data showing that on 22nd June, three patients were being treated for COVID-19 at Hereford County Hospital. This is an increase on the previous week, but nothing like the levels seen earlier this year when well over 100 patients were being treated at hospitals in Herefordshire.
Another sign of hope is that just a small handful of cases have been recorded in those aged over 40, indicating that the successful vaccine rollout is really starting to limit the number of infections, hospitalisations and deaths from the virus.
The age group with the highest COVID-19 infection rate in the week ending 19th June was the 20-24 age group, with 194.3 cases per 100,000 population recorded. This is closely followed by the 15-19 age group, with an infection rate of 161.4 cases per 100,000 population. Only a relatively small number of people in these age groups will be fully vaccinated, so it was always likely that as society opened up, these groups would be vulnerable to catching the virus.
