Taxi drivers in Herefordshire have been told that they are committing an offence if they refuse a short journey without good cause with concerns that vulnerable people could be left at risk.

An email was sent out to taxi drivers today by Herefordshire Council’s Taxi Licensing team stating that drivers could be putting vulnerable people, especially females, at risk by leaving them to walk home, especially at night.

Quite often these people have been under the influence of alcohol and could be forced to walk home unaccompanied, potentially putting themselves at danger.

It comes after Herefordshire Council received a number of complaints from members of the public.

The Licensing Authority says that it takes public safety very seriously and would take action against any driver caught doing this.
