There has been a staggering increase in the number of COVID-19 cases being recorded in Gloucestershire over recent days.

Latest data released by Public Health England indicates that in the seven day period ending 18th October, a total of 6,423 new cases of COVID-19 were recorded in the county, giving an infection rate of 1,000.6 cases per 100,000 population. This is a huge increase on the previous week when a total of 1,174 new cases were recorded, which meant that during that week, Gloucestershire had one of the lowest COVID-19 infection rates in the United Kingdom.

The hardest hit areas appear to be Cheltenham, Newent, Stroud and Nailsworth. Some areas have been recorded COVID-19 infection rates of around 2,000 cases per 100,000 population, meaning that in the recent seven day period, almost 1 in 50 people in these areas tested positive for COVID-19.
