A passionate debate between Kington Residents and Herefordshire County Council representatives over proposed car parking charges took place at The Burton Hotel in Kington.

Herefordshire County Council want to impose parking charges on three more car parks and maintain charges on another.

Over 100 people turned up to the meeting which was organised by Kington Town Council and the town’s Chamber of Trade.

Residents expressed their concerns and anger at the proposals as many live in the town centre where there is no parking and they have no other choice than to use the council car park.

Concerns were also raised about the cost of the permits, displaced parking and and how it will effect footfall to the high street shops and businesses.

A number of carers also expressed concerns on how they could visit clients should the proposals go ahead.

Herefordshire Council was also questioned about the lack of public consultation, an impact study, a transport revue and costs concerning the setting up of the scheme.

Many residents pointed out that while Kington doesn’t have as many parking charges as the other towns, it also has less facilities such as a public swimming pool, a Sixth Form and a good transport infrastructure.

At the end of the meeting Councillor John Harrington said that he would reflect on the issues raised and report back to the town council.
