Prince Philip’s funeral will take place next Saturday, Buckingham Palace has confirmed. The funeral will be televised on the majority of TV channels and therefore the public have been urged to remain at home and to not travel to pay their respects.
A three minutes silence will also be held at 3pm next Saturday to allow the country to pay respects to the Duke of Edinburgh.
Under normal circumstances, a funeral like Philip’s would be attended by between 700-1000 people, but due to COVID-19 restrictions, only 30 people will be allowed to attend the service and members of the public are being told to stay at home to limit the risk of spreading COVID-19.
Prince Philip’s death was announced yesterday, with an announcement placed on the Royal Family’s website that said:
It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.
Further announcements will be made in due course.
The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson is expected to shortly announce a period of national mourning, up until the Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral next Saturday.
Prince Harry is expected to attend his grandfathers funeral, with sources stating that Harry is expected to fly to the United Kingdom late next week.
The Duke had requested that he didn’t want a state funeral and therefore his body will remain at rest at Windsor Castle until his funeral on Saturday.
