West Mercia Police officers seized a moped on Saturday, after a rider lost control of a moped and ended up in a field of Christmas Trees.

Whilst on patrol through Leigh Sinton, officers witnessed two males on a moped without helmets pull out of Lower Howsell Road onto Leigh Sinton Road.

The moped which was not registered, taxed or insured failed to stop for officers Police pursued the moped along the Leigh Sinton Road and then onto Leigh Sinton Christmas Tree Farm, the two males tried to make off into the farm.

The moped rider lost control of the bike on some gravel and both persons on the bike ran into the field of Christmas trees.

The bike was seized by Police but the two offenders could not be located in the vast fields of trees.

PC Dave Olczak who was driving the Police vehicle stated:

“An increasing number of criminals use mopeds to commit crime because they think they can get away and are untouchable.

“Officers have to assess and constantly re-assess the risk to all persons involved when considering pursuing a vehicle.

“The riders did not have helmets on, however were on a low powered moped which was traveling at a very low speed, with the weight of two males on a bike designed for one rider.

“That along with several other factors, allowed me to come to the conclusion that it was proportionate to pursue the vehicle which turned onto the farm very shortly after making off from our police car.

“Police were unable to would detain the males given the vast field of trees that they disappeared into after losing control of the motorbike.

“PC Olzak and PCSO Kevin Tudge who was in the passenger seat of my vehicle were very pleased to take control of the moped, which has recently been involved in several incidents of leaving petrol stations without paying for fuel.

“The vehicle has been recovered and will be destroyed. Other Police units attended the location to assist in the search, but given the rural location, it was not practical to secure a containment area for the offenders.”
