Police in South Wales have fined several motorists and turned several away from entering Cardiff after finding many had broken COVID-19 restrictions by making unnecessary visits to Wales and the capital.

Some of the reasons motorists used were that they were dropping Christmas presents off to relatives and some claimed they were visiting university friends.

Cardiff and Vale of Glamorgan Chief Superintendent Wendy Gunney, said: “I would like to thank the vast majority of people who are enjoying their weekend with caution and within the confines of the existing regulations, but those not adhering to the rules are continuing to put others at increased risk.”

A total of 110 motorists were stopped, with 15 told to leave Cardiff and 12 receiving fines.
