Herefordshire Council will begin carrying out work on Plough Lane and Harrow Road in Hereford next week, to help make the footpath a more friendly place for wheelchair and mobility scooter users.
Local resident Cameron Wood has campaigned for a number of years to have the kerbs dropped on both Plough Lane and Harrow Road, to help avoid wheelchair users and people in mobility scooters from having to use the road in some parts.
Cameron said the following on Twitter:
“I still have to pinch myself every time I realise that next week work will begin to make Harrow Road and Plough Lane in Hereford accessible for those using wheelchairs and mobility scooters.
“I couldn’t have made this happen without the support of @pollybayfield, @hannahbechITV & @andybevanitv who have worked with me over the last four years to highlight this issue and they have followed my campaign to get Herefordshire Council to listen and act on this issue.
“Next Tuesday (30th August), work will begin to make Plough Lane accessible from Bulmers & then onto Harrow Road up to Mills Mobility. In the next two weeks wheelchair and mobility scooter users will see a dramatic improvement in the accessibility along this route.
“This will ensure that those travelling to the businesses on Harrow Road from the footpath on Plough Lane will not have to put themselves at risk by using the road as our pavement because of the current lack of drop kerbs.
“I would like to thank everybody at Herefordshire Council who have been involved over the past four years ensuring this issue is taken seriously as it possibly can be.
“I look forward to sharing the new and accessible pavement network along Plough Lane and Harrow Road in the coming weeks once the work is completed in the middle of September.”
