Earlier this month, an incident occurred on the A49 at Onibury where a bridge was struck by a tractor.

From National Highways:

While the road remains structurally safe, both the road bridge and adjacent footbridge have been severely damaged.

To protect pedestrians and road users, we’ve installed two-way traffic lights and we’re diverting the pedestrian footpath into the southbound traffic lane with a concrete protection barrier in place.

Safety is our top priority and until we’re able to carry out a full repair of the bridge, the traffic lights will need to remain in place.

We’re unable to give a timeframe for how long we expect this to be as repairs will be complex because of the unique design of the bridge.

Please note that due to the close proximity of a level crossing across the A49, traffic management will be under strict 24/7 control to help ease traffic flows and to ensure the safety of all traffic coming through the crossing.

Delays can be expected, especially during peak times, so please plan your journeys ahead, taking alternative routes where possible. For longer distance north/south journeys, we recommend taking the A5, M54, M6, M5 and M50.

We’ll provide further updates once the details of our repair work have been confirmed. We appreciate the disruption this is causing and we’d like to thank you for your patience.
