More than 300 residents and traders have signed a petition to call for Leominster Town Council to commit to hosting the Victorian Market this Christmas, following its cancellation due to improvement works in Corn Square and the surrounding area.

Local shops are concerned that the likely drop in footfall, due to their being no Christmas Market, could make it an extremely difficult festive period for local businesses.

The Victorian Market attracts thousands of visitors to the town and provides a huge financial boost to so many local traders at this important time of year.

With many businesses struggling with increased costs due to the cost of living crisis, and on the back of the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s seen as critical to many, that the Victorian Market goes ahead, even if it has to be held in a different part of the town to normal.

The petition, started by Simon Powell, says:

‘Leominster Town Council have cancelled the wonderful and hugely successful Victorian Xmas Market without any discussion with relevant stakeholders (residents, community groups, market traders and local businesses).

‘We want them to review this decision and have meaningful dialogue about looking at options to hold this fantastic event in December.

‘If we get 500 signatures The Council are required to discuss the matter as a separate agenda item for a maximum of 15 minutes and the petition organiser is allowed 5 minutes to present the petition.

‘Any person affected by The Council’s decision can sign the petition.

‘This includes anyone who would expect to visit The Victorian Xmas Market.

‘Please, please, please sign the petition so that we can save this amazing event. It just won’t be Xmas without it.’
