Holmer Church of England Academy in Hereford flooded again earlier this week, but there is hope that a solution to the flooding situation can be found soon, with the Government now working on a report.
In a letter to parents, Headteacher Jayne Maund said:
“I am writing to express my thanks for your continued support and to update you on the efforts we are making to address the recurrent flooding at our school.”
“Historically, Holmer School has experienced flooding, but such events were rare, occurring approximately once every ten years or more.
“As you are aware, since September 2024, we have faced flooding on four separate occasions.
“Since September, we have been working tirelessly alongside Government departments, and our concerns have reached the highest levels of authority. The Secretary of State for Education, Bridget Phillipson, is fully aware of the situation, and the Department for Education has commissioned a comprehensive flood report, which we anticipate will be completed this week.”
It’s understood that there have also been meetings with the leader of Herefordshire Council, Councillor Jonathan Lester, and MP, Jesse Norman, to look for immediate and long-term solutions.
The school is hoping that the Department for Education’s Flood Resilience Fund will provide the necessary financial support to implement specific measures designed to mitigate future flooding.
These projects are likely to require significant investment and time, leaving the school vulnerable to further flooding in the interim.
The school has been praised on recent occasions by parents for its swift action to recover from flooding events.
