Herefordshire Council is pleased to announce that, following a tender exercise, Cambrensis Civil Engineering Ltd has been chosen as the contractor for the new Holme Lacy Road and Quiet Routes East schemes.

The Holme Lacy Road scheme is a package of improvements to the existing road surface and spaces for walking and cycling in the South East of the city. It will run from Oak Crescent at the north-western end to the Thorn Business Park junction at the south-east end, and improvements will include:

Resurfacing of the carriageway

Improved crossing points

Provision of a raised table and high friction surfacing to moderate vehicle speeds

Improved shared space for cyclists and pedestrians

The most notable features will include a new signalised junction between Holme Lacy Road/Chestnut Drive/Hoarwithy Road, and a widened shared surface at Holme Lacy Road railway bridge, including a new ‘shuttle working’ arrangement for vehicles.

The scheme closely complements the Western Bypass phase 1, which will reduce traffic on Holme Lacy Rd and provide better access for cars and safer active travel into Rotherwas, helping to make this key employment site even more attractive to businesses and investors.

The Quiet Routes East scheme will deliver various options to travel throughout Hereford safely, and will include improved signing, lining and crossing points at the following locations:

Route A- The Pastures/Hoarwithy Road/Cider Press Drive

Route B- Putson Avenue/Hinton Road

Route N- Oak Crescent

Route O- Chestnut Drive/Hoarwithy Road

Route P- Winston Road

Cllr Philip Price, Cabinet Member Transport and Infrastructure, said: “It is very pleasing to be able to announce Cambrensis Civil Engineering Ltd as our delivery partners for the Holme Lacy Road and Quiet Routes East schemes.

“The tender process was thorough and competitive, and we are confident that these improvements will be carried out to the high standard that the people of Herefordshire have a right to expect.

“These works will lead to improved options for all modes of transport. There will be improved road surfaces and greater road safety through the installation of a high friction surface to moderate vehicle speeds, as well as important work to the drainage around Holme Lacy Bridge. The benefits will also be felt by those who choose to walk or cycle, with greater shared surfaces and improved crossing points.

“These schemes are part of our ‘Year of Delivery’ that will see us complete several major projects to improve transport and infrastructure in the county. These projects in particular will deliver significant benefits to travel in the Holme Lacy Road area of the city, and I look forward to seeing works as they progress.”
